Scratched or Chipped Window Glass: Repair, Replace, or Leave It? (Metro Vancouver Guide)
A stone chip or a few fine scratches is easy to put off. The window still closes and the room stays dry. Across Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, and the Fraser Valley, the mark often shows up in fall, after the lawn is cut, a windy night, a renovation, or a hard clean. The question is the same. Live with it, polish it, replace the glass or sealed unit, or replace the window?
The choice depends on the mark, the glass type, and where the pane sits. A hairline scratch high on a picture window is often cosmetic. A stone chip on a ground-floor lite, a door, or tempered safety glass is not. Wet-season temperature swings can also run a small chip into a crack while you wait.
This guide stays on a chip or scratch while the pane is still in one piece. If the glass has already dropped into small cubes, start with our [tempered glass after fall storms](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/tempered-glass-cracks-after-fall-storms-vancouver) guide. If you are still looking at a small mark, keep reading.
## What usually causes chips and scratches
Most marks come from a hit, or from something dragged across the glass.
- **Mowers and trimmers.** Gravel, bark, or a pebble thrown at a low window often leaves a round chip, sometimes with a short star.
- **Storm debris.** Twigs, grit, and loose objects ride the fall wind. Rain alone rarely scratches glass. The debris in it can.
- **Careless cleaning.** Razors, steel wool, abrasive pads, and gritty cloths leave fine lines. Dry-wiping a dusty pane drags grit across the glass. Grinding the outer face will not fix a haze.
- **Construction.** Sparks, masonry dust, scaffolding, dropped tools, and sandy tape all mark glass. A clear pane before the painters can show lines in the next low sun.
## How to tell a surface scratch from a chip that can spread
Use a fingernail in daylight. Do not press hard.
A **surface scratch** is a line you see more than you feel. It stays a line, with no pit and no short cracks running off it. It rarely spreads.
A **chip** is a small crater. You can often feel a dip, and you may see hairline cracks leaving the pit. On ordinary annealed glass, that pit is already a weak point. Heat, cold, or another small hit can extend it.
Sort it this way:
- Faint line, no pit: scratch.
- A pit, or a tiny star: chip.
- A line already more than a few centimetres long: a crack, not a chip to watch.
- A tempered stamp, or a door or sidelight: do not plan on polishing until the type is confirmed.
A long crack with no new impact is covered in our [thermal stress](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/window-cracked-by-itself-thermal-stress-cold-weather-vancouver) post. For a [quote](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/quote), send one wide photo and one close photo. A coin in the close shot helps with scale.
## Why tempered glass usually cannot be polished or repaired
Tempered glass is heat-treated so the surfaces stay in compression. It takes everyday bumps better than ordinary glass, and it breaks into small cubes when it fails. Doors, many sidelights, and other higher-risk spots often use it.
Polishing cuts into that compressed skin and can release the pane. A scratch repair on tempered glass can end with the whole lite shattering. Windshield resin is for laminated auto glass, not a tempered house lite, and not the cavity of a sealed unit.
A chip in tempered glass is usually a replacement. It can also start a later full shatter, with no second hit. If cubes are falling, or the pane is hanging, use [emergency glass](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/emergency) and keep people clear.
Annealed picture-window glass can sometimes have a light scratch softened by polishing. Polishing removes glass, can leave a dip, and cannot fill a chip or stop a crack. On a double-pane unit it only reaches the outside faces.
## Safety around kids, ground-floor glass, and doors
Who uses the opening matters as much as how the mark looks.
- **Kids and pets.** A flake or a sharp edge is a cut risk at child height. A ground-floor bedroom should not wait the way a high transom can.
- **Ground-floor windows.** A chip that becomes a crack can open a gap for weather and for security.
- **Doors and sidelights.** People bump these lites, and many are tempered. Replace a chip here. If the pane is loose, cover it and call.
- **Fine scratches up high.** If the line does not catch, the frame is sound, and nobody leans on the glass, leaving it is often reasonable.
If you are not sure a pane is safety glass, say so. A site look is more reliable than a guess from the curb.
## How wet-season swings can turn a chip into a crack
A mild day followed by a clear, cold night cools the outside of the glass while the room side stays warm. Sun on part of a pane does the same thing. A sound pane usually handles that. A chip is a notch, and cracks like to start there.
A small October chip can show a short line after a cold morning, then a longer crack on the next bright afternoon. Our [cold-morning thermal stress post](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/window-cracked-by-itself-thermal-stress-cold-weather-vancouver) explains cracks with no new impact. A chip gives that stress a starting point.
Do not aim a heater at the pane, pack a blanket on it, drill it, or fill it with household glue. Clear tape can hold a flake, but it is not a repair. If rain can enter, or the pane is loose, treat it as [broken window repair](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/services/broken-window-repair). Photograph the chip now so a later crack has a date.
If a storm, accident, or vandalism caused the damage, we can help with insurance documentation. Coverage still depends on your policy, and cleaning scratches are often maintenance. This is not legal advice.
## Leave it, polish it, replace the glass, or replace the window
Homeowners weighing chipped window glass repair in Vancouver against a full swap usually need one of four paths.
**Leave it** for fine scratches on glass that is not tempered, with no pit, away from doors and child height. Seeing the lines at sunset is often acceptable.
**Polish it** only for shallow scratches on annealed glass, and only if a softer line is enough. Deep chips, radiating cracks, and tempered glass should skip this.
**Replace the glass or sealed unit** when the damage matters and the frame is sound. An outer chip on double-pane glass usually means a new insulated unit, built to the pocket you have. You cannot slip one sheet into a sealed sandwich. The keep-the-frame idea matches our [glass-only vs full window](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/fogged-window-glass-only-vs-full-window-fall-vancouver) post. With a sound frame, scratched window glass replacement is usually this path.
**Replace the window** when soft wood, a bent sash, dead hardware, or leaks at the trim mean the frame cannot hold new glass. [Window replacement](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/services/window-replacement) can stay glass-only or become the whole window after a site look. Same-day glass is offered when possible, and timing still depends on size, type, and fabrication.
Weather coming through tonight belongs on [emergency board-up](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/emergency). A stable chip can usually wait for a measured visit. With over 15 years here as a licensed and insured shop, the scratch that can stay and the chip that should not wait are both familiar calls.
## Which option fits the damage
| What you see | Often reasonable | Usually skip |
|---|---|---|
| Fine scratches, no pit, not a door or child-height lite | Leave it | Replacing the window for looks alone |
| Stone chip or small star on annealed glass | Replace the lite or sealed unit if a crack has started | Windshield resin, or calling it just a scratch |
| Chip on a door, sidelight, or tempered pane | Replace the safety lite; cover it if loose | Polish, tape as a repair, or cut-to-fit |
| Chip that has become a long crack | Replace the glass; board up if the opening is unsafe | Hoping the crack stops on its own |
| Soft, bent, or leaking frame | Replace the window, or repair the frame then the glass | A new unit in a pocket that cannot hold it |
Send a wide shot, a close shot with something for scale, any corner stamp, and the sill if the wood looks soft. A stable chip can go on a [quote request](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/quote). Call if the opening is unsafe. Strata homes should note council rules. See [strata glass](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/strata) for that path.
## FAQ
### Can chipped window glass repair in Vancouver fill a pit like a windshield shop?
Usually no. Windshield resin is for laminated auto glass, not a sealed house unit, and not tempered glass. A real chip or a deep scratch calls for scratched window glass replacement, or a new sealed unit in a sound frame. Light scratches are the marks people sometimes leave.
### Is it safe to leave a small chip until spring?
A faint scratch with no pit is commonly left. A chip with a short crack, or any chip in a door, at child height, or in tempered glass, should not wait all winter. Wet-season swings can run it into a crack. A firm pane can usually wait for a booked visit. Nothing promises the chip will sit still.
### Does scratched window glass replacement mean a whole new window?
Not by default. A solid, square, dry frame usually means glass-only or sealed-unit replacement. A full window fits when the frame is soft, bent, leaking, or no longer holding hardware. The visit confirms the scope.
### Will insurance pay for a chip or a scratch?
It depends on the policy and the cause. Storms, accidents, and vandalism are the events many policies discuss. Cleaning marks are often maintenance. We do not decide coverage. If you open a claim, we can invoice the work and help with insurance documentation.
## Ready to sort a chip or a scratch?
Fine scratches can stay. Chips, tempered panes, doors, and glass at child height deserve a closer look before another cold week. A sound frame often means a new lite or sealed unit. A failed frame means replacing the window so the repair lasts.
