Bay and Bow Windows Before Winter: Drafts, Fog, and Wind in Metro Vancouver Homes

Rain-specked projecting bay window on a Metro Vancouver house in late October, with warm interior light and wet fallen leavesLate October in Metro Vancouver is the week the heat stays on and the next wind is already in the forecast. Across Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, and the Fraser Valley, bay and bow windows are often the first glass that feels it. They project past the wall, so rain and gusts hit more than one face, and the seat inside is often the coldest spot in the room. A flat window can fog, crack, or draft. A bay or a bow does the same things, with more lites and more joints. One centre pane can go milky while the sides stay clear. A crack can sit on the angled lite. A draft can come from a joint, not from the glass. If the haze is on a flat wall window, start with our [glass-only versus full window](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/fogged-window-glass-only-vs-full-window-fall-vancouver) guide. Overnight moisture is in our [first frost](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/first-frost-overnight-window-moisture-vancouver) post. This one stays on projecting bays and bows. ## Why a bay or bow shows winter first A bay is usually a wider centre with two angled sides. A bow is a curve of narrower lites. Both stick out from the wall, so they meet the season before a flat window does. - **More glass, more weather.** Each lite is often its own sealed unit. One can fail while the others stay clear. - **Wind has a side to push.** An angled pane takes a gust a flat window mostly sheds. A loose stop or a tired crank shows up in the first real wind. - **The seat cools first.** Once the furnace runs, air at the projection drops before the rest of the room. - **Joints collect water.** The small roof, the seat, and the seams catch leaves and wind-driven rain. Water inside is frame work, not an automatic new window. Wood bays are common on older Vancouver houses. Vinyl sealed units are common in Surrey, Coquitlam, and the Fraser Valley. Either way, the repair depends on a firm frame. [Window glass replacement](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/services/window-replacement) covers bay and bow windows in single-pane through triple-pane glass, including low-E, tempered, and laminated when the opening calls for them. ## A short walk-around before the next wind Pick a drier hour. Rain hides a crack. - **Name the shape.** A flat centre with two angles is usually a bay. A curve of narrower lites is usually a bow. - **Wipe each lite.** Haze that will not clear sits between the panes. Beads that wipe off are on the room side. - **Look at the angled faces.** A crack often starts at the edge that takes the weather. - **Try the cranks and locks.** A sash that will not pull in leaves a gap. New glass will not close it. - **Press the seat and the head.** Soft wood, bubbling paint, or a stain at the ceiling is a frame clue. - **Stay off the roof.** Leaves at the head can wet the top of the window. Clear only what you can reach from the ground. If a pane is out, or rain is coming through, call [emergency glass](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/emergency). A crack that still holds can usually wait for a booked visit. Same-day glass is offered when possible. A custom lite is made to size, so timing can vary. ## Drafts, fog, and cracks are different jobs Heating season makes all three feel like one cold window. They are not. **A draft with clear glass** often comes from a sash that does not latch, worn weatherstrip, or a joint between sections. Feel along the rails and the seat. New glass will not stop air at a sash that still will not close. **Fog between the panes** will not wipe off either face you can reach. On a bay, the centre lite often clouds first. Our [failed seals and energy](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/failed-window-seals-energy-loss-vancouver-rainy-season) post covers why that glass feels colder once the heat is on. **Room-side moisture** wipes off. A seat behind a curtain is a humid pocket, not a failed seal by itself. The wipe test is in our [room-side condensation](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/room-side-condensation-vs-fogged-igu-vancouver-fall) post. **A crack or chip** is damage in the pane. A long crack, or a growing chip, needs new glass. A faint scratch is covered in our [scratched and chipped glass](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/scratched-chipped-window-glass-repair-or-replace-vancouver) guide. It does not, by itself, mean the whole bay comes out. ## One lite, or the whole bay Glass-only means the frame stays and a new sealed unit is made for the failed pane. It often fits when most of these are true: - The complaint is one fogged, cracked, or broken lite. - The wood or vinyl around it does not give under a gentle press. - The sash still closes and locks, or the lite is fixed and the stops are solid. - Water stays on the glass, not on the seat or the wall. - The other lites are still clear. Older glass beside a new unit can differ a little in tint. A full bay or bow is the more honest path when the seat, head, or a mullion is soft or out of square, when two or more lites have failed and the cranks are tired, when a sash will not pull shut, or when rain comes past the trim. An old single-pane bay with no depth for a sealed unit is a different limit. Our [single-pane upgrade](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/single-pane-to-double-pane-glass-upgrade-vancouver) post is that check. A new unit will not stiffen rotten wood. Low-E is optional when a unit is made, and the useful coating depends on which way the bay faces. Our [Low-E upgrade](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/low-e-upgrade-when-replacing-fogged-glass-fall-vancouver) post covers that choice. ## Safety glass on a low bay Some bays drop close to the floor or sit beside a door. Those openings often call for tempered safety glass, and sometimes laminated glass if the lite should stay together after an impact. Exact spots are confirmed on site. This is not a code ruling, and it is not legal advice. Tempered glass breaks into small pieces and cannot be cut down later. Do not tape a spidered lite as a winter fix. Our [tempered cracks after fall storms](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/tempered-glass-cracks-after-fall-storms-vancouver) post explains why, and our [laminated or tempered](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/laminated-vs-tempered-glass-security-storm-vancouver) guide covers what goes back in. An upper-floor bay with a normal sill is often ordinary sealed glass. If wind has opened the bay, board-up comes first and measured glass follows. After a storm, accident, or break-in, we can help with insurance documentation. Coverage depends on your policy. We do not decide it. ## What to send with the quote Photos sort a bay faster than a phone description. - The whole projection from outside, including where it meets the wall. - Each lite, with any haze, crack, or chip. - The crank, the lock, and any sash that will not close. - The seat, and the head if you see staining. - Bay or bow, which floor, which way it faces, and whether rain came inside. Strata and rental rules sometimes limit colour, profile, and who may change a window. That varies by building. Settle it before glass is ordered. This is not legal advice. Common-area glass is in our [strata winter checklist](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/strata-glass-winter-checklist-property-managers-vancouver). Send the set through [Get A Quote](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/quote), or start from the [residential](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/residential) page. With over 15 years here as a licensed and insured shop, the quote should say which lites are glass-only and whether the frame needs more than glass. Same-day service is offered when possible. Nothing here promises a date. ## Which bay problem usually fits which fix The middle column is the usual path, not a promise from a photo. | What you notice | Often means | Usual next step | |---|---|---| | One milky lite; frame firm | That sealed unit failed | Glass-only on that lite | | Clear glass; air at the latch | Weatherstrip or a tired crank | Fix the close first | | Crack on one angled lite | Damage in that pane | Replace it if the frame is firm | | Soft seat, or water on the wall | Frame trouble, not only glass | A wider repair or a new bay | | Several bad lites and dead cranks | The bay is aging together | A full bay is often cleaner | | Pane out, or rain coming in | The opening is not secure | Board-up, then measured glass | ## FAQ ### Can you replace one pane in a bay and leave the others? Often yes, when that lite is the problem and the frame around it is firm. The unit is made to the opening. Older glass beside it may differ in tint. ### Will a new centre pane stop the draft at the window seat? Only if the draft was that unit, or a gap at that lite. Air at a crank that will not close, or at a joint in the seat, stays until the close is fixed. Say where you feel the air. ### Are bay windows more likely to break in a windstorm? They stand out, so wind and debris have more to hit. A sound unit is not a promise against a branch. An open pane is an emergency. A stable crack can usually wait for a booked visit. ### Should a fogged bay lite wait until spring? A stable fogged unit can wait for a measured visit. Waiting through the wet season usually means another cloudy winter, and the cavity can worsen. That risk is in our [etching and mold](https://www.vancityglassltd.com/blog/fogged-window-etching-mold-risk-waiting-wet-season-vancouver) post. A leak, or a crack that is opening, should not wait. ## Ready to check the bay before the next wind? A cold seat in late October is a clue, not a diagnosis. One milky lite in a firm bay is often glass-only. A draft at a sash that will not latch is often the hardware. Soft wood, or rain past the trim, is the frame. Sort those before you order a whole projection, or one lite that will not stiffen a rotten seat.
