After the Clocks Fall Back: Smashed Window Glass in Metro Vancouver Homes

Sunday, November 1, the clocks fall back. Halloween was the night before. Across Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, and the Fraser Valley, the lane is dark an hour sooner. A lit room at grade, and a door by the path, show from the sidewalk once the lamps are on.
A smashed pane after a break-in or vandalism is not a storm branch, and it is not a shop window. Glass may be in the frame or on the floor. The first hour is people, then the hole, then a plain record of what you found. New glass comes after the opening is closed.
Weather has its own list in our first hour after a storm. A shop front is our storefront board-up note. A check before anything breaks is our basement and ground-floor post. This one stays on a home opening that is already open after dark.
Why the first dark evenings matter
The time change does not weaken the glass. It changes when the house is bright and the street is not.
- After Sunday, dusk is early. A ground-floor room is lit while the lane is still dim.
- A chip from Halloween can wait. Tape and small marks are in our Halloween week post. A hole you can reach through cannot.
- Rain is normal this week. An open frame wets the floor while you are on the phone.
- A basement hopper sits at the path. It is glass a person can reach without a ladder.
A crack with no hole, on a cold morning and with no impact, is a different problem. See our thermal stress note. If a hand fits through the pane, or rain is coming in, treat it as open.
The first minutes: people before glass
If you come home to broken glass, or you hear it after dark, leave the broom.
- If someone may still be inside, leave. Go to the sidewalk or a neighbour and call the police. This is not legal advice. The pane can wait.
- If the house is empty, keep shoes on. Keep children and pets out of the room.
- Do not push hanging glass. Tempered glass can drop as small cubes. A tap can finish the fall.
- Watch water near power. Rain can reach a heater or an outlet. Leave that circuit alone if you are unsure.
A cut comes before cleanup. Use a flashlight from the doorway. Do not climb through the hole.
Call emergency glass when the opening cannot be left. The shop at 1289 Hornby St is open 24 hours. Same-day glass is offered when possible, depending on size, type, and access. Nothing here promises a time.
What to photograph before you sweep
Take photos before the floor is clean. We can help with insurance documentation. Your insurer decides the claim. This is not advice about your policy.
- A wide shot from outside, house and opening in one frame, with the lane, the well, or the door.
- The frame and the lock side, plus any pane still in place.
- The floor and the sill, so the spread of glass is clear.
- One line you write: the time, whether anyone was home, and whether rain is coming in. Only what you saw.
Our storm documentation post is the same habit after weather. A hole by the lock on a calm night is a different note from a branch in the yard. Send the wide shot to a landlord or manager the same night if they must order the glass.
Board-up when the opening is open
A cover is for the night. It is not the new window.
- A short crack with no gap can usually wait for a visit. Tape only marks it.
- A hole, hanging glass, or a door lite you can reach through needs a cover. Plywood outside is the usual board-up if you can fasten it from safe ground. Skip the wet ladder in the dark.
- Plastic on the inside only slows rain. It does not lock the room.
- Do not cut a pane to fit. Low windows and door lites are often safety glass, and a store sheet is often the wrong thickness.
How long plywood should stay is in our board-up duration note. Broken window repair starts once the opening can be measured. A sound frame can often take a new pane or a sealed unit. Soft, twisted, or unlockable frames should be named first.
Laminated or tempered on the way back in
Both are safety glass, and they fail differently. The full comparison is our laminated or tempered post.
Tempered glass usually falls into small cubes, so the hole is open at once. It cannot be patched. Our tempered cracks note is that limit.
Laminated glass can crack and still hang in place, so a clear hole takes longer. People often ask about it for a pane at the lane, a basement hopper, or glass beside a lock. That is holdover, not a promise the opening cannot be forced. A thin sash may not accept it.
If the old glass was a sealed unit, the usual fix is a new unit in that frame. The visit confirms the make-up. This is not a code ruling or legal advice. A bedroom window used as a way out has its own limits, and a photo will not settle them.
Frosted glass only hides the room. See our privacy glass post. Fog with no hole is a failed seal, covered in our glass-only versus full window note.
Ground-floor windows, basement glass, and doors
The panes that matter after dark are the ones reached without a ladder.
- A slider or picture window by the path. A firm frame can often take glass only. That measure is window replacement.
- A hopper or slider in a well. Clear the glass before anyone steps down. Do not kneel in the well after dark to pull a shard.
- A lite beside the lock. Cover it the same night. French and bifold breaks are in our patio door post.
- Glass above the first floor. Less often a smash. If rain is entering, people come first, then a cover.
A single old sheet can sometimes become a sealed unit when the sash is deep enough. Our single-pane guide is that limit. The quote should say glass-only or a new window.
What to tell us, and who else to call
Have this ready:
- House, suite, or strata, and the city.
- Window, door lite, patio door, or well.
- Glass on the floor, hanging, or already boarded.
- Rain coming in, and whether anyone was hurt.
- Photos, plus a gate or a dog in the yard.
In a condo, the pane may be common property or part of the unit. Bylaws vary. This is not legal advice. Tell the manager before glass is ordered if you are unsure who owns it. Start on our strata page. A rental may limit the work. A house is usually residential glass.
With over 15 years here, as a licensed and insured shop, the order is usually simple. Close an open hole first. Put new glass in a sound frame. Name a soft sill before anything is ordered. The measure is a free visit through Get A Quote. A board can stay while the unit is made. It should not become the winter window.
Which opening usually fits which next step
The middle column is the usual path, not a promise from a photo.
| What you find | Often means | Usual next step |
|---|---|---|
| Someone may still be inside | Safety before glass | Leave, and call the police |
| A hole, hanging glass, or rain inside | The opening is open | Keep people clear, then board-up |
| A short crack, no gap | Damaged, but not open | Photos, then a booked visit |
| Small cubes on the floor | Often tempered glass | Replace it. It cannot be patched |
| A sheet still hanging together | Often laminated, or ordinary glass | Cover it if it can fall, then match the new unit |
| A lite beside the lock | A reach to the hardware | Close it, then ask about laminated glass |
| A soft sill or a sash that will not lock | The frame may be part of the job | Say so before glass is ordered |
FAQ
Should I board the window myself after dark?
Yes, if you can fasten a cover from safe ground, with no wet ladder and no walk through glass. If glass is hanging, or you are not sure the house is empty, call emergency glass.
Does laminated glass stop a break-in?
It often stays together when it cracks, so a clear hole takes longer than tempered glass, which usually falls away. That is not a guarantee. The frame has to accept it, and someone needs to see the opening first.
Can you replace only the smashed pane?
Often, when the frame is firm and the door or sash still closes. A soft sill or a hopper that will not latch is a wider job. The quote should say which. Same-day glass is offered when possible. Nothing here promises a date.
Is a smashed basement window an emergency in the rain?
Treat it as one if weather or a person can pass through. A stable crack with no gap can usually wait for a visit.
Ready to close a smashed window after dark?
An open pane at grade will not improve in the first wet week of November. People first, then photos, then a cover. Tempered, laminated, or a sealed unit that uses one of those can go back once the frame is seen. A short crack can wait for a booking. A hole in the dark should not.
